The ancient history of the Nagas remains somewhat obscure. Over centuries, various tribal groups migrated and settled across the northeastern region of India, establishing their own sovereign mountain territories and village-states.

The word “Naga” is believed to have originated from the Burmese word “Naka”. It is said that the British couldn’t pronounce Naka properly and began referring to the tribe as Naga — hence the name.
